Ansar Khan: Luongo a possibility for Detroit

Khan suggests Luongo could come to Detroit via a trade involving, not Pavel Datsyuk, but Jimmy Howard. Possible bumps in the road include Mike Keenan, Florida's GM, and future salary demands on Luongo's part ($7 million or so). The fact that Nick Lidstrom is likely to get the league maximum is another point against this happening. I'm all for getting a veteran goalie but not at the cost of the team's future (ie. Datsyuk or Howard). Luongo isn't the guy for Detroit.

Matt...not only would I deal Howard OR Datsyuk, I'd deal them both for Luongo. He could be the lynchpin for this team for ten years.

I don't know, Bill. He's never even been in the playoffs and we know what it's like to go with a goalie that's never been in the playoffs. Granted, Pavel has done nothing in the playoffs so far and Howard has only played a couple games in the NHL but that's not how it's always going to be.

Sure, Luongo's stats look great if he stops 55 of 60 shots in a game but how will he perform if he's getting less work?

He's a pricey goalie and if successful in Detroit, would only command more. I'm not all that interested in seeing the Wings play a goalie the league max.

If he's got this entitlement mentality, I say forget him. The Wings have had enough trouble with goalies screwing up the lockerroom, not to mention with prima donna super stars demanding appreciation (in the form of $$$).

The Wings should go for a goalie who will help them usher in their young goaltending stable by bringing a veteran presence for a year or two.

There are actually quite a few reasons why Luongo should not come to Detroit. First, he has a remarkable potential to turn into a Sergei Federov-and I don't mean skill-wise. He's already pushing up his price, and he hasn't done anything to deserve that. The upcoming season he'd be at a reasonable price, but think about the following season. We won't be able to afford two people making the league maximum, and I'll take Lidstrom over Luongo any day. On top of that, isn't it about time Detroit starts working on it's goalie logjam? Howard is a farm guy, and I think it's about time we bring a goalie up through the system. Howard is gonna be good, you can already see that. It's a thrill to watch this young guy play. Why trade him away for one year of Luongo?
